More Americans want the government to pay more attention to foreign policy issues in 2024, according to a new poll.
Thirty-eight percent of Americans say foreign policy is one of their top five challenges for the government in 2024. Go to new vote The Associated Press (AP) and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted the survey last month.this is more than twice Only 18% of Americans named foreign policy a top priority for 2023, with only 18% of those surveyed including the topic on their list.
According to the poll, Republicans and Democrats were each more likely to list foreign policy as an issue for 2024. Forty-six percent of Republicans included foreign policy, while 34% of Democrats did the same.
Additionally, 35 percent of respondents cited immigration and the border wall as one of their biggest concerns heading into the new year. This comes as Republicans have criticized the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis and as many cities have faced an influx of asylum-seeking migrants over the past year.
The share of Americans listing immigration has also increased since a December 2022 poll, when 27% included the issue in their responses. Immigration is the top issue for Republicans in 2024, with 55% citing it as the top issue, compared to just 22% of Democrats.
A similar proportion of Americans cited inflation and the economy as their main concerns in December 2023 compared to December 2022. Thirty percent said inflation was their top issue, while 24% cited the economy. Education and student loans appear to remain a concern for Americans heading into 2024, with 22% including it in their responses.
The poll was conducted from November 30th to December. Results from 1,074 adults as of April 4, 2023, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
