A shooting during a street festival in Ohio on Saturday resulted in at least 12 people injured, prompting attendees to seek safety while others assisted the wounded.
The victims’ ages ranged from 16 to 61.
Toledo’s Deputy Police Chief, Joe Heffernan, indicated that as of a few hours after the incident, no suspects were in custody following the gunfire around 5:30 p.m.
Officials are asking festival attendees to share any photos or videos they may have taken, as these could help in identifying suspects as the investigation progresses.
The incident took place near the Old West End Festival, known for its live music and home tours.
Heffernan noted that it appeared at least two individuals exchanged gunfire and, as reported by the Associated Press, were likely targeting each other.
The police chief expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s truly unfortunate that anyone would disrupt an event that has long been cherished by the community.”
“That’s just… terrible.”
Among the injured, two individuals were reported in critical condition, with ages mostly in their early 20s.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine released a statement expressing deep concern over the situation, emphasizing that “Summer festivals should be a safe place for families to enjoy without fear of violence.”
The Old West End Festival is a two-day event held in Toledo’s historic district featuring music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping. It’s often referred to as “Toledo’s kickoff to the summer festival season.”
The Old West End Association announced the cancellation of the festival planned for Sunday, stating: “After discussions with festival organizers, law enforcement, and the City of Toledo, we believe this kind of behavior is unacceptable and cannot go on.”
