Protesters Arrested Outside ICE Facility in Broadview

A number of protesters clashed with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Friday, leading to violence and several arrests.

According to local authorities, 21 individuals—12 men and 9 women—were arrested after they blocked traffic and refused to leave the area outside the ICE facility in Broadview, which is roughly 12 miles from Chicago.

Nearly 50 demonstrators breached a barrier that marked a designated protest zone, moving onto a street that leads directly to the processing center. The Cook County Sheriff’s office reported that four police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation; three of them were taken to a nearby hospital. The injured included two officers from Broadview, a Cook County deputy, and an Illinois state trooper, but thankfully their injuries were not life-threatening.

Protesters had been gathering at the facility every Friday morning for months, complaining about the increased law enforcement presence linked to the Department of Homeland Security’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” which started on September 8th, according to NewsNation.

During the protest, participants displayed signs, some reading “Protest Is Patriotic” and “God Demands Freedom,” along with others designed like butterflies. By Friday afternoon, the situation appeared to have calmed down.

Counter-protesters were also present at the scene.

Those arrested, aged between 25 and 69, face charges of obstruction and disorderly conduct and were taken to the Broadview ICE Processing Facility.

Regarding the protests, White House Border Czar Tom Homan stated, “Have at it, but don’t cross the line.”

This week, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings ordered the release of over 300 detainees held by ICE in Illinois.

Friday was also the deadline for the Department of Homeland Security to provide information regarding the flight risk and current status of 615 individuals allegedly detained without a warrant this year. By November 19th, the department is required to submit status updates on these individuals, and by November 21st, it must release 313 people who were detained in violation of a previous settlement that prohibits warrantless arrests.
