Boat Capsizing Near Puerto Rico
Recently, a tragedy unfolded when a boat capsized off the coast of a small, deserted island west of Puerto Rico. At least 40 individuals were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, though sadly, two people lost their lives in the incident. The situation escalated during a confrontation involving a machete, according to officials.
Survivors reported that approximately 60 people were on board the vessel at the time. The Coast Guard mentioned that the makeshift boat turned over late Sunday night after the altercation, causing several passengers to jump into the water without life jackets—a pretty dangerous move, to say the least.
It was around noon on Monday when a nearby boater spotted survivors who had been in the water for over 12 hours. That person managed to alert the authorities and assistance was promptly provided, leading to the rescue of four individuals at that moment.
As of Monday evening, rescue efforts were still ongoing. Interestingly, the Coast Guard has yet to reveal where the people aboard the capsized vessel were from. It’s known that many migrants frequently journey from Hispaniola—home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic—to Puerto Rico via the Mona Passage, often in precarious conditions.
This incident is just one of many where migrants have faced perilous sea journeys in search of better lives. Last June, another tragedy occurred when an overloaded boat sank in open waters northwest of Puerto Rico, resulting in the deaths of 11 Haitian women and girls.
Moreover, reports highlight the severity of the situation in Haiti, where ongoing gang violence is displacing vast numbers of people. The United Nations estimates that around 3,000 fatalities occurred in the first half of the year due to this violence. Armed groups reportedly control a significant portion of Port-au-Prince and other areas, which complicates the already dire circumstances many face.
In recent weeks, the plight of Haitian migrants has been underscored by other incidents as well, including a makeshift vessel carrying 60 individuals being intercepted in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
