UK Councils Prepare to House Asylum Seekers

Recent leaks indicate that over 90 percent of local councils in the UK are set to accommodate alleged asylum seekers by year-end.

Internal Home Office estimates suggest that by 2025, around 92 percent of UK authorities will be hosting asylum seekers, an increase from the current 82 percent, as reported.

This shift marks a departure from the previous Conservative government’s reliance on hotels to house asylum seekers. Currently, over 32,000 migrants occupy hotel spaces, a practice that has faced growing criticism following various incidents, including a serious case involving a 14-year-old girl attacked by a migrant in Epping.

The new approach may include utilizing “decentralized” accommodation, such as private homes leased by the government via contractors, which is believed to be more cost-effective. However, it remains uncertain whether spreading undocumented immigrants—many of whom are young men—across communities will address local safety concerns.

Currently, the government can accommodate 46,640 alleged asylum seekers in dispersed settings but aims to increase this capacity by an additional 66,000 across various types of housing.

Shadow Housing Secretary Sir James Cleverley has expressed concerns, stating that rather than resolving the crisis, councils are now compelled to house more young unemployed people at taxpayers’ expense, intensifying pressure on the already strained social housing market.

Plans also include repurposing former military bases into migrant housing, despite previous criticisms from Labor regarding the inadequate living conditions often found there. In a past statement, Stephen Kinnock noted the party’s reluctance to use such facilities, emphasizing the need for more suitable accommodations for asylum seekers.

Nevertheless, with a significant rise in illegal crossings since Labor’s assumption of power, the situation warrants a reevaluation. Currently, two sites are under consideration in Inverness and East Sussex, capable of housing about 900 migrants.

Defense Minister Luke Pollard acknowledged that while the proposed accommodations won’t be luxurious, they will adequately meet needs, aiming to relieve the pressures on hotel-based asylum spaces.
