A Wisconsin judge has mandated that a woman, who was convicted in the 2014 Slender Man stabbing case, be readmitted to a state psychiatric hospital following her escape from a group home in November.
Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge K. Scott Wagner authorized the state health department’s request to revoke 23-year-old Morgan Geyser’s release privileges. Geyser fled from Yo-Yo Quality Care Group Home on November 22 and was later detained at the Waukesha County Jail after being extradited from Illinois; however, the authorities did not realize she was missing until early November 23. On the same day, she was discovered with 43-year-old Chad Mecca at a truck stop in Illinois.
In a letter to Judge Wagner, Geyser’s attorney, Anthony Cotton, argued that she should be placed in a mental health facility instead of jail. He noted, “Considering the absence of new criminal charges against her in Waukesha County and her prior convictions related to mental illness, we believe she should be confined to a mental health facility rather than a correctional one.”
In January, Geyser had received conditional release after spending nearly eight years at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute.
Back in 2014, Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier attacked Payton Leutner during a slumber party, stabbing her 19 times with Geyser continuing the assault while Weier encouraged her. The three girls were only 12 years old at the time of the incident.
After the attack, both Geyser and Weier confessed that they aimed to kill Leutner to impress the fictional character Slender Man. They expressed fears that Slender Man would harm their families if they failed to carry out the attack.
In 2017, both girls pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter but were found not guilty by reason of mental illness, leading to their confinement. Geyser received a 40-year sentence, while Weier was sentenced to 25 years in a mental health facility.
