🤖 Coinbase introduces AI agent wallets

The market for AI agent commerce is rapidly expanding.

Coinbase is stepping into this arena as well.

Recently, they launched Agentic Wallets, specifically designed for autonomous AI agents.

This new product enables AI agents to manage funds, make payments, trade tokens, earn returns, and engage in transactions independently.

Developers can utilize command line tools (npx awal) along with preset financial functions like authenticating, funding, transferring, trading, and earning.

These wallets operate on Coinbase’s Base L2 with no gas fees, meaning agents won’t face interruptions due to network costs. They come with programmable spending limits, and private keys are securely stored within Coinbase, not accessible to the agents. The system also features built-in Know Your Transaction (KYT) protocols that block risky interactions automatically.

Crucially, Agentic wallets support x402, the open payments protocol from Coinbase that allows stablecoin payments to be integrated directly into HTTP requests. This enables agents to explore the x402 Bazaar, find paid APIs and services, and make purchases autonomously.

Since its inception, the x402 protocol has facilitated over 50 million transactions. The x402 Foundation, co-founded by Cloudflare, aims to establish an open standard. Notably, Google has already incorporated x402 into its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), while Visa, PayPal, and American Express are all working on agent payment systems.

In a statement, CEO Brian Armstrong remarked, “The next AI agent unlock has started.”

🗣️ Reactions

In their announcement blog, Coinbase’s Heads of Engineering, Erik Reppel and Josh Nickerson, noted, “We are transitioning from AI agents that advise to agents that act, from assistants who make suggestions to helpers who execute.”

They elaborated, “Did your agent find a better revenue opportunity at 3 a.m.? It can automatically rebalance without requiring approval; permissions and controls are already in place.”

Dan Kim, Coinbase’s VP of Business Development, shared his insight into the x402 ecosystem, stating, “Enterprises are beginning to adopt x402. With agents scraping content, having them as part of the standard benefits content creators and enables users to buy products online without exposing credit card details.”

🧠 Importance of this development

Coinbase is actively pursuing the intersection of AI agents and crypto payments, which many consider a vital area of crypto technology today.

The market implications are significant. Major tech companies are racing to enhance their agents’ transactional capabilities.

  • Google has recently launched its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
  • PayPal is collaborating with OpenAI for immediate payment processing on ChatGPT.
  • Visa has developed the Trusted Agent protocol.
  • Stripe has just introduced its Agentic Commerce Suite.

Experts agree that there’s a huge potential for agent commerce, potentially generating $3 to $5 trillion globally by 2030. This is where cryptocurrencies have an edge over traditional systems; stablecoins are programmable, instantaneous, borderless, and eliminate the need for credit card numbers.

Traditional payment frameworks are tailored for human users and involve complex processes like authenticating and chargebacks.

In contrast, stablecoins settle transactions within seconds without intermediaries, making them far more suited for AI transactions. For an AI agent needing to pay small amounts for API access or premium data, traditional credit card systems are overcomplicated.

X402 simplifies the process to just a single HTTP header.

Let’s consider some potential applications:

  • DeFi agents could monitor interest rates across multiple protocols and automatically adjust positions when needed.
  • Research agents could pay per article for exclusive financial data, per query for real-time market insights, or per minute for GPU processing—all without human approval for minor transactions.
  • AI content creators could receive USDC for their creations, cover hosting expenses, and reinvest in improved tools.
  • Agents might conduct commerce where one bot contracts another for a subtask, settling payments in stablecoins.

How imminent is this? It may be closer than one would think.

The x402 protocol has already seen over 50 million transactions, but it’s worth noting that we’re still developing the necessary infrastructure.

Discovery is still in early stages (the x402 Bazaar is just getting started), and trust frameworks are yet to be firmly established. Regulators haven’t really begun considering autonomous agents managing funds, either.

However, the groundwork is being laid.

Coinbase appears to be positioning its developer platform as a significant player in the emerging agent economy, just ahead of its earnings report for Wall Street.

One can’t help but wonder if Agent Commerce will feature in the financial results.
