10 minutes: Richardson, the son of a U.S. basketball player, stole the ball from Paredes, held off two U.S. attackers and carried the ball to safety. Amazing!
9th minute: ChanceWell, maybe. The free kick went to Zimmerman, the big defender headed it past Aaronson, who missed it by a hair, but Aaronson was clearly offside and the flag was duly raised.
8 minutes: A strange and unnecessary off-the-ball foul by Ezarzouri, who thought he could get at Paredes without the referee noticing, but couldn’t. Free kick from 30 yards out, near the right wing.
7 minutes: Tolkin finally broke up the Moroccan passing streak and fed Aaronson, who was fouled.
6 min: Tolkien was on goal again, as Morocco held the ball and passed it around confidently.
5 minutes: The US subs are warming up. Really? An unopposed header is going to result in an injury that forces a change?
4 minutes: Hakimi charges towards the Moroccan attack, wins a corner, Tolkien heads the ball away and immediately falls to the ground, looking like he’s heading it with the top of his head, which is a bad move.
Commenting on the national anthem, Sachin Shah said: “Morocco won the national anthem. Half of our team doesn’t seem to understand the words.”
Maybe they just didn’t want to whistle any more. Also, I’m a semi-professional musician myself, and I have to say, our national anthem is difficult to sing.
1 minute: A corner was called, and then a foul was called, apparently against Zimmermann. Replays showed he was being held down by his shirt the whole time he was running in the penalty area. How audacious.
kick off: And as soon as the opening whistle blew, there was constant whistling from the crowd, definitely not in support of the U.S. team.

It seems like such a long time ago. It was before the Opening Ceremony.
Here’s what happened…
Cristian Medina scored the equaliser in the 16th minute of added time. Yes, 16th minute.
The pitch incursions continued.
The field has been cleared.
The stadium was emptied and all spectators were instructed to pack their belongings and leave.
Play resumed after more than an hour, but first the VAR checked, with Medina ruled out as offside.
A few minutes into the match, the official whistle blew and those who left the stadium thinking it was a 2-2 draw were no doubt surprised to find out later that day, or perhaps the next day, that Morocco had actually won.

Zimmerman and Robinson are mainstays on the U.S. senior team and are two of the team’s three “overage” players. Zimmerman is actually 31 years old.
Midfield: Captain Tanner Tessman (Venice/Italy) will be in the defensive/number 6 role, followed by Jack McGlynn (Philadelphia/USA) and Djordje Mihajlovic (Colorado/USA), who has been one of the tournament’s breakout ‘overage’ players.
Forwards: Griffin Yeo (Westerlo/Belgium), Paxten Aaronsson (Vitesse/NED), Kevin Paredes (Wolfsburg/Germany)
Until recently, most U.S. players of this age played college soccer.
Paredes and Tesman both received yellow cards and if they receive another yellow card they will miss the semi-final.
Paredes scored two goals in the deciding group game against Guinea, the other by Mihailovic, who also opened the scoring in a 4–1 win over New Zealand, Zimmermann scored in a scramble and Gianluca Busio added a third in the 30th minute. Aaronson added a goal in the second half.
The only change from the Guinea match: McGlynn replaces Maximilian Diez in midfield.

The rivalry between the USA and Australia is heating up in the pool.
The U.S. men’s soccer team advanced to the final tournament.
Is it the year 2000 already? Has the long-delayed Y2K glitch finally hit and sent us back 24 years in time? Ah, I wish I could be young again…
For those unfamiliar with men’s Olympic soccer, each of these teams represents their country’s best players, chosen from three players of any age, plus 15-16 players under the age of 23 that professional clubs are comfortable releasing for the tournament.
But because of some weird rules, these teams aren’t as strong as the full national team. There are no “overage” players like Christian Pulisic or Weston McKennie, and full national team players under 23 like Gio Reyna, Yunus Musah, Joe Scully and Ricardo Pepi are on other teams at the moment. But these players are good players. The Sydney Olympics was something of a debut for Landon Donovan, John O’Brien and the rest of the players who helped the U.S. men reach the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup.
Will any of these players be ready to make an impact in two years’ time? Or will any leave France with a medal?

The most significant step will still be the appointment of a new senior team coach, with the U.S. Soccer Association now searching Europe for a big-name candidate, but the Olympic team provides an initial spark of positivity and forward momentum, boosting a bruised squad in need of a revitalization before the World Cup on home soil in 2026.
In a month that began with the U.S. unexpectedly exiting the Copa America group stage and leaving coach Gregg Berhalter without a job, the Olympic team is on a roll in France, where the U-23s earned a rare berth in the knockout stages with a 3-0 win over Guinea on Tuesday in Saint-Etienne.
As a result, the U.S. men’s national team is in the knockout stages for the first time since Sydney 2000, and will face Morocco in the quarterfinals on Friday in Paris. Forget the Copa jitters, tuck away the Olympic optimism. Here is a U.S. team that is exceeding historic standards.
