New Yorkers react to Trump renaming Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’
Federalist elections correspondent Brianna Lyman spoke with New Yorkers regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America.’ She also touched upon the Clinton Foundation’s internship listings that emphasized the need for ‘high discretion,’ as well as an incident at a Wisconsin youth football game where a parent reportedly tripped a player, which was discussed on ‘Hannity.’
A recent poll indicates a significant portion of Americans oppose Trump’s move to rename Lake Ontario and impose steeper tariffs on Canadian goods.
In the three-day Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Sunday, 63% of respondents were against the name change to Lake America, while only 14% supported it, with the remainder either undecided or not answering the question. Additionally, 57% opposed the newly proposed tariffs on Canadian products, compared to 20% in favor.
When Fox News Digital sought comments, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers commented, “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years.” She added that “President Trump promised voters that he would not allow our country to be taken advantage of anymore,” which is part of his efforts to defend American industries and workers. Rogers suggested that due to Trump’s strong leadership, America is “putting America back on the map.”
Last Thursday, Trump officially signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, during a period of heightened trade tensions with Canada. He expressed that the idea had been on his mind for quite some time, referencing a past change where they renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
In his directive, he instructed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System to include the new name. The order described Lake Ontario as an “invaluable asset” to the U.S.
Trump claimed that the United States is the top defender of the Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario. He mentioned that without U.S. support and investment, this freshwater resource would not be as accessible for shipping and recreational use. Recently, he accused Ontario of exploiting American businesses, stating on Truth Social that Canada aims to act like a state but is not one. He strongly asserted that the long-standing “rip-offs” must end.
Earlier in the summer, a new 50% tariff was placed on numerous Canadian goods, with retaliatory tariffs from Canada reaching similar rates on U.S. imports.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online, included 1,023 adult participants from the U.S. and had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
