Most Americans in new survey say it is 'likely' there will be a peaceful transfer of power

Most Americans I say I believe A new survey says there is a “high chance” of a peaceful transition of power after the next election.

According to a YouGov survey, Released on FridayThe poll found that 55% of Americans say it's “very likely” or “somewhat likely” that there will be a peaceful transfer of power in January, while 30% say they think it's “unlikely” or “not at all likely.”

The poll found that more Democrats than Republicans said the transition of power will be peaceful, 65 percent to 58 percent.

If Vice President Harris wins, 53% of Americans (61% Democrats, 54% Republicans) say the transition of power will be peaceful. If former President Trump wins, 55% of respondents (57% Democrats, 65% Republicans) think the transition is likely to be peaceful, the survey found.

The results were released after former President Trump's acrimonious exit from the White House following the 2020 election. Trump has consistently claimed, without evidence, that President Biden's victory in the last election was rigged or stolen.

Trump, the Republican nominee, is facing a second impeachment investigation in the House of Representatives following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, with 10 Republicans voting against it along with Democrats.

The former president was indicted in 2023 on charges of trying to hold on to power after losing to Biden and for his role in the Jan. 6 riot, when a mob stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the election results.

The case had been stalled as the justices considered a recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, but special counsel Jack Smith announced new charges last month that took that ruling into account. Earlier this week, Trump's defense team was arguing with Judge Tanya Chutkan over whether prosecutors should move forward with their case.

Democrats have argued in recent weeks that the vice president-Trump contest, less than two months away, could be the last Democratic election. Harris, who rose to the forefront of the Democratic field following Biden's decision to drop out, seemed to agree in a podcast interview aired in April.

“I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this may truly be the last democratic election,” co-host Angie “Pumps” Sullivan said.I can't take it anymore” is a podcast from that time.

“That's correct,” Harris replied.

Biden said earlier this month that he had “no confidence at all” that there would be a peaceful transition of power if Trump loses to Harris in November.

The Hill/Decision Desk HQ Polling Index currently shows the Democratic candidate leading the former president by 3.8 points (49.5 percent to 45.7 percent).

The YouGov poll was conducted among 1,083 respondents between August 21 and 25 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
