Most Americans Still Pray, Express Gratitude at Thanksgiving Dinner

A Pew Research Center poll found that the majority of Americans still pray and express gratitude during Thanksgiving dinner.

Although some polls over the past decade have shown declining support for religion, surveys show that Americans believe in heaven, angels, the power of prayer, and the primacy of higher leadership. They are also shown to be a religious people who strongly believe in sexuality. . That belief in prayer continues to this day through Thanksgiving, a holiday steeped in tradition where Americans come together to give thanks for life's blessings.

pew research investigation indicates.Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults say someone prays or blesses them at dinner (65%) or says something they're grateful for (69%). ” More than half (56%) say Thanksgiving dinner usually involves someone doing both of these things.

Research shows that Americans who consider themselves religious are more likely to pray on Thanksgiving, including 91% of white evangelical Protestants, 88% of black Protestants, 74% of Catholics, and white non-evangelicals. This includes 72% of Protestants.

In contrast, only 22% of atheists say it is common for someone to pray or bless at Thanksgiving dinner, 39% of agnostics, 22% of Jewish adults, and 45% of respondents answered that they had no particular religion.

Majorities of religious and nonreligious adults say someone usually gives thanks at Thanksgiving dinner, including 48 percent of atheists, 61 percent of agnostics, and This includes 59% of those who answered “Nothing in particular.”

A Rasmussen Report poll last year found that even more Americans believe Thanksgiving is Thanksgiving. “It's one of the most important holidays for our country.”

The Pew Research Center poll was conducted among 9,609 U.S. adults from Nov. 12 to Nov. 17, 2024.
