Most Americans use AI on their phones, but just 38% are aware of it.

According to a recent survey, a significant 90% of Americans utilize AI on their smartphones, though only 38% are aware of it. This study, involving 2,000 adults, revealed that many individuals are unaware of AI’s integration into their daily routines. For instance, 42% acknowledged AI’s role in weather forecasting, 35% in call screening, 34% in autocorrect functions, 26% through voice assistants, and 25% via automatic brightness adjustments.

Interestingly, AI features in cameras—like night mode (19%) and photo memory slideshows (20%)—are deemed essential by many for photography. Despite substantial usage, nearly half of the respondents (51%) expressed skepticism about using AI on their devices, yet over 80% admitted to employing common AI tools routinely when prompted to list features.

Smartphone usage extends beyond leisure; one in six individuals reports carrying out at least ten work-related tasks daily, while 38% undertake a similar volume of personal activities on their phones each day. Additionally, 55% of Americans, particularly Gen Z individuals at 74%, use their smartphones mainly for work tasks over any other device.

The survey indicates that 47% perceive smartphones as vital for their careers, with Millennials (65%) and Gen Z (62%) being the most likely to feel this way. Furthermore, 60% of participants use their phones more than any other device for organization purposes.

Strikingly, even though people often use only about half of their available apps regularly, 57% believe they can explain all their phone’s features. Interestingly, one-third of respondents discover new functions on their phones at least once a month.

In terms of practical uses for AI, participants mentioned employing it for assistance with ideas and better task organization. Creative uses also emerged, such as learning cooking skills, songwriting, or simply engaging in fun conversations. A quarter of individuals who initially thought they weren’t using AI found that their views shifted positively upon recognizing how integrated it is into their lives.

When considering future AI applications, most individuals express interest in utilizing it to save time (28%) or simplify tasks (27%). Additionally, many hope that traditional phones will evolve significantly over the next three years. Some envision features allowing them to monitor health, detect vital signs, predict thoughts, or even perform complex tasks without user input.

Looking ahead, people have various hopes for the next decade. Some desire smartphones capable of fully projecting 3D holograms for virtual meetings or movies. Others dream of devices that can learn personal preferences or offer real-time language translation during calls.

There are even ideas for more futuristic innovations, such as controlling devices with eye movements or managing personal finances seamlessly. While it seems ambitious, the potential for AI in our everyday lives continues to stir curiosity and excitement.
