Most believe Republicans will prevail in the shutdown dispute

A recent Harvard Harris study indicates that most registered voters believe Republicans will prevail in the upcoming government shutdown.

In the survey, respondents were asked who they think would win the government shutdown fight: Democrats or Republicans. Overall, 62% expressed confidence in a Republican victory, while just 38% sided with the Democrats.

A significant 92% of Republicans are assured they’ll come out on top, with 62% of independents sharing that sentiment. Interestingly, 70% of Democrats, however, are optimistic about their chances in the shutdown battle. This stems from their stance against maintaining the current subsidy levels established during the Covid period and their reluctance to shift the focus to healthcare issues.

“Look at the real facts,” Johnson stated at a press conference, discussing how Republicans have put forth a straightforward measure to keep the government operational. He emphasized that it’s about keeping the lights on and allowing for a productive dialogue on behalf of the citizens they represent.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has criticized this approach, referring to the proposal as minimal—just 24 pages—and essentially a continuation of the status quo. He seems to be framing the situation as a healthcare challenge to appeal to the more progressive members of his party.

“They created a red herring. It’s a distraction. They opted to create a dispute over healthcare, implying Republicans are unconcerned about it,” he remarked.

According to Johnson, the issues are distinct. A straightforward, continuous funding solution would simply enable Congress to focus on healthcare discussions, which he claims has always been part of their plan. “We have time to do that,” he concluded.

The survey was conducted from October 1-2, involving 2,413 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 1.99%.
