A majority of House Democrats voted in favor of allowing foreign nationals, including illegal immigrants, to vote in municipal elections in the District of Columbia.
In 2022, D.C. Council Democrats approved a plan to allow foreign nationals who have lived in the District for 30 days to vote in local elections, including undocumented immigrants with no legal basis to live in the U.S.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives Voted The vote was 262-143 in favor of a bill from Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas) that would block a plan to ensure that municipal voting rights in Washington, D.C., are reserved only for eligible U.S. citizens.
Fifty-two Democrats, mostly from Republican-leaning and battleground states, joined Republicans in supporting the bill, while 143 voted against it, allowing Washington, D.C., to grant local voting rights to foreigners, including illegal immigrants.
“Free and fair elections are a prerequisite for a healthy republic,” said Rep. August Pfluger. Said In a statement:
The Washington DC Council’s radical decision to allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants and foreign agents, to vote in elections will weaken the voting power of citizen voters. My bill will restore the sanctity of the voting process and ensure that only Americans vote in our nation’s capital.

President Joe Biden sided with most Democrats last year when the White House indicated it supported allowing foreigners to vote in Washington, D.C., elections.
“The president does not support allowing foreign nationals to vote in federal elections,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time. “We have been very clear on that point. With regard to this particular vote or this particular bill, I don’t have any updates to share here. If the situation changes, we will let you know.”
