Most People Think Freedom Has Decreased Under Macron

Concerns Over Erosion of Freedom in France

Research indicates that nearly 60% of those surveyed in France feel that their freedom has diminished during Emmanuel Macron’s presidency. According to polls conducted by CSA for Le Journal du Dimanche, 57% of respondents believe their liberties have been weakened over the last eight years, while a mere 7% feel that freedom has improved since Macron took office in 2017.

The paper notes, “This reflects not just criticism but a fundamental breakdown of trust.” It suggests there’s a growing disconnect between the public and the powers that be, particularly regarding the safeguarding of essential rights, which people feel are being ignored.

Freedom, typically a topic of intellectual discussions, has resurfaced as a pressing public issue, albeit with a more defensive tone. Recent health crises, social media censorship, and increasing governmental oversight have contributed to this sentiment.

The survey highlights that a significant portion of the population believes at least one of the 12 fundamental freedoms has been compromised. Emotions around this issue are expressed across various demographics, including age, social background, and political alignment.

Concerns center on the “pillars of democracy,” with 58% fearing for freedom of speech and 51% for press freedom. Additionally, 44% of respondents worry about religious freedom and education rights, while similar percentages express anxiety over freedom of movement and conscience.

The survey findings cut across age and gender lines, revealing a consensus on the need to protect fundamental freedoms. Among political groups, deep concerns are shared by those supporting both the left-wing LFI party and the populist national assembly.

A speculative note from Le Journal du Dimanche pointed to the potential emergence of new ideological rifts in France. Remarkably, 76% of participants expressed a desire for leaders to prioritize the defense of freedom, yet political parties seem to have overlooked this issue in favor of economic or social topics.

The paper concludes that while there has been little engagement with this darkness, the desire for freedom could unite a divided populace. The call for freedom resonates across different age groups and ideologies, suggesting a rare consensus in an otherwise fragmented society.

In a related note, U.S. Vice President JD Vance warned at the Munich Security Conference about threats to European democracy arising from internal sources. He cautioned that in attempts to combat misinformation and maintain democracy, leaders might inadvertently jeopardize the very values they aim to uphold.
