Young Liberals and Responses to Immigration Raids
A recent Signal poll revealed that a significant 60% of young liberals believe it’s acceptable to go beyond peaceful protests in reaction to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Interestingly, 42% of liberals overall feel the same, even if it involves breaking the law. The polling organization noted that this jumps to 60% for those under 30.
Brent Buchanan, the president of Signal, commented on the findings, saying, “Liberals seem quite willing to break the law to protest against government actions they oppose, such as ICE raids.” He further mentioned that certain political factions in the U.S. openly endorse illegal actions to push a political narrative, reflecting a perception that illegal immigration isn’t considered a crime in dire situations.
This stance among young liberals is somewhat paradoxical. Legal and illegal immigrants often end up as the biggest economic losers, facing lower wages and increased living costs. It seems counterproductive, right?
Among 1,500 surveyed individuals, 25% deemed actions beyond peaceful protests acceptable, with 11% strongly agreeing. When drilling down, 34% of women under 55 shared this viewpoint, including 16% who strongly agreed. Meanwhile, 70% of the total respondents disagreed, and 55% did so strongly. Conservative respondents showed only 14% agreement, while 84% disagreed. In terms of views on secession, 72% opposed it compared to 21% who were in favor. Racial differences appeared minimal in the responses.
In a broader context, the survey results come at a time when some Democrats, who recently lost power, have been employing increasingly dire language regarding the socio-political landscape. Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois, for instance, raised concerns about militarization in urban areas, questioning if military personnel would be present during elections to secure ballot safety. He cited fears of alleged electoral fraud and potential aggression at polling sites.
In cities like Los Angeles, ICE agents have faced confrontations with groups opposed to immigration enforcement. Mobs have been noted to support actions that put ICE officers at risk, revealing the tensions surrounding immigration and law enforcement.
Some Democrats have reportedly backed these confrontations, further complicating the debate. Author Greg Sargent pointed out that such violence could inadvertently benefit the Democratic Party, as it creates an opportunity for them to advocate for a more hopeful and stable political future.
Meanwhile, Rep. Daniel Goldman from New York expressed that Democrats can oppose excessive law enforcement methods while still standing firmly against violence targeted at law enforcement itself. It raises a nuanced position that many seem to grapple with amid differing public opinions on these issues.
Interestingly, the data doesn’t align with Sargent’s assertions. Among voters favoring independence, 72% were against violence towards law enforcement, countering the narrative of widespread support for such actions.
Under President Biden, progressive strategies have leveraged immigration policies to recruit skilled individuals from developing nations, integrating them into U.S. labor markets. This strategic approach appears to sustain low-productivity jobs while also providing financial assistance to foreign governments through remittances.
