A mother has been arrested in Florida, nearly three months after she allegedly drowned her two young daughters in Texas, with toxicology reports indicating the children had cocaine in their systems.
The incident unfolded on February 11, when deputies were called to a home in Katy, Texas, concerning two children who had drowned. Tragically, the girls, ages 2 and 3, tested positive for the drug.
Authorities have raised questions regarding how the children were exposed to cocaine and the involvement of their mother, Laura Nicholson, 23. She faced two counts of injury to a child linked to their deaths and was arrested in Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday, May 8.
Under Texas law, charges of injury to a child may result from actions or failures that cause significant bodily harm or put a child in danger. However, the specific details leading to the charges have not been disclosed.
It remains unclear when the toxicology results confirmed the cocaine presence and what evidence led to the charges nearly three months post-incident. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office shared that its Violent Offender Enforcement Team collaborated with the Caribbean Fugitive Task Force to locate Nicholson in Florida.
Nicholson was taken into custody on Monday in Fort Myers, according to Sheriff Carmine Marceno. Authorities found her at a local mental health treatment facility and arrested her without any incident.
She has since been moved to the Lee County Jail. The sheriff highlighted the successful cooperation among various law enforcement agencies in apprehending wanted fugitives.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed sorrow over the loss of the two children, emphasizing the tragedy they represent for the community. He shared, “May these little ones rest in peace.”
Details surrounding how the toddlers encountered cocaine remain murky, as well as whether it was an accidental ingestion or due to neglect. The investigation is ongoing, and it’s uncertain if others will face charges or when Nicholson will be extradited to Texas.
As of now, it’s unclear if Nicholson has engaged legal representation. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has not provided additional specifics about the drowning incident pending the ongoing investigation.
