Discovery of Mummified bodies in Brooklyn
On Wednesday afternoon, a mother and son were found mummified in a Brooklyn apartment, as reported by local sources and authorities. Residents had noticed a strange odor that had persisted in the building for several days.
The bodies of the 80-year-old woman and her 52-year-old son were discovered by police officers who entered the apartment building located at the intersection of Jay Street and Tillery Street in downtown Brooklyn shortly before 1 p.m.
According to sources, both individuals were unresponsive and faced down, showing signs of mummification.
Emergency services confirmed the man’s death at the scene, and the two bodies were removed by 7:35 p.m.
A police officer described the situation, stating, “It’s really bad. You can smell it as soon as you step out of the elevator. You can almost taste it,” commenting on the dreadful odor emanating from the apartment.
Neighbors remarked that the smell of decaying bodies had been lingering in the building for days. The doorman noted that the son, who lived nearby but not with his mother, used to visit frequently to care for her. He mentioned, “I haven’t seen him in probably two or three weeks.” A neighbor living across the hall said the smell had been noticeable for several days, and maintenance staff were trying to mask it with air freshener.
Initially thinking the odor was from a trash can outside, one neighbor commented that it only got worse over time.
The city’s medical examiner will investigate to determine the cause of death for both individuals. Authorities stated there were no immediate signs of trauma on the bodies, and no crime is believed to have occurred at this time.
