Mother and son graduate together from TCU during a memorable Mother’s Day weekend

A special day for a mother and son.

Brandi Fields and her son Kyle both graduated from Texas Christian University on Friday, making this Mother’s Day weekend particularly memorable for the enthusiastic duo.

Their matching purple Nike sneakers, the school’s colors, were a fun touch. They both received their diplomas during TCU’s first-ever opening ceremony dedicated solely to graduates.

“When we learned that the graduate program would have the same ceremony, it really struck us—it was happening together,” Brandi shared.

Kyle, at 22, recently completed his master’s in liberal arts and was thrilled to see his mother, 50, earn an executive MBA after returning to school.

“When she made the decision to go back to TCU, I couldn’t have been more excited,” he said.

Originally from California, the family moved closer when Kyle enrolled at TCU in Fort Worth. Following the passing of his mother in 2020, they made the decision to come together for his education.

Some of Brandi’s friends joked that Kyle wasn’t amused about his mom joining him at college. “They were like, ‘No way, Kyle’s going to be mad. You’re going to his school now?’” Brandi laughed.

But Kyle disagreed. He values having his mom around. “Seeing her work hard on her studies inspired me. When she’d come home and dive into her homework, I thought, ‘I need to keep up with her,’” he explained.

The admiration is mutual.

“Watching him grow as an adult truly amazes me. It brought back the reality that we’re achieving this together,” Brandi reflected.

For her, it’s important for moms to pursue their dreams and grow. “I think it’s crucial for mothers to take care of themselves and continue challenging themselves,” she said.

Both mother and son recognize the significance of their shared accomplishment. “Not everyone gets to attend school simultaneously with their mom, especially at the master’s level,” Kyle noted.

Brandi added, “Walking the stage together on Mother’s Day weekend was profoundly meaningful for our family.”

As for the matching sneakers, Kyle felt it was a no-brainer. “The shoes fit my style perfectly,” he said. “I thought it would be cool for us to wear matching pairs and walk across the stage together.”
