Virginia Senator Tara Durant, a Republican, announced her candidacy on Wednesday for the U.S. House seat currently held by Democrat Eugene Vindman.
Describing herself as a “conservative fighter,” Durant states on her campaign website that, if elected to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, she intends to back presidential policies that focus on tax reductions, border security, and the restoration of law and order. Vindman, who hasn’t yet confirmed his intention to run for a second term, is, notably, the twin brother of retired Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman, who was involved in events surrounding Trump’s first impeachment in 2019.
In a press release shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation, Durant mentioned, “I’m not a career politician. I’m a mother on a mission to secure our borders, restore law and order, and bring common-sense leadership to Washington. In Congress, I will fight to enhance community safety and secure a prosperous economic future. This means building walls, halting taxpayer funding for illegal immigration, fully supporting the police to ensure safety, and safeguarding women’s sports by restricting biological males from competing, while also reducing costs and curbing wasteful spending to revitalize the economy.”
Durant further criticized Vindman, stating, “Eugene Vindman backed the radical Biden agenda at every turn, from excessive spending to soft-on-crime policies that jeopardize families and undermine the economy. I am running to create a brighter future, enhance community safety, and support a robust economy for Virginia families.”
In the 2024 elections, Vindman faced a slightly less competitive Democratic candidate and Republican Derrick Anderson, winning by just 2.6 percentage points in a district that was less than a 3-point margin. Vindman’s underwhelming performance came despite outpacing his Republican opponent significantly.
Durant, who is a marine spouse and mother of three, has represented Virginia’s 27th District in the state Senate since January 2024 and was previously in the Virginia House from 2022 to 2024.
District 7 was once held by former Democratic representative Abigail Spanberger, who is also a candidate for the Virginia Governor Election in 2025.
