Mother Confesses to 30-Year-Old Murder of Newborn
A Long Island woman has shockingly confessed to the murder of her newborn daughter over three decades ago, stating plainly to police, “I did it.”
Dennis Marker, aged 55, reportedly revealed to investigators on February 2 that he had stuffed paper towels in the baby’s mouth to muffle her cries.
The infant, known only as Baby Jane Doe, was discovered lifeless in a plastic bag by garbage collectors near an intersection in Calverton—about 110 miles from Manhattan—on September 27, 1993.
This case remained a mystery for nearly 33 years.
“I did it,” Marker said to the Suffolk County Homicide Squad. This confession came according to a felony criminal complaint obtained from the Suffolk authorities.
“I did everything. The baby was crying, so I shoved a paper towel into the baby’s mouth,” Marker stated, as documented in the accusation.
At the time of the crime, Marker was just 22 and was known as Dennis Reishman. The indictment didn’t elaborate on the crime’s specifics.
In a breakthrough, genetic genealogy played a significant role in identifying the child and subsequently leading detectives to Marker, as mentioned by a police source.
The newborn was among nine unidentified infants whose DNA profiles were added to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database last year.
Marker previously lived in Selden and had worked as a dental office manager in Jamesport, as noted in a 1996 marriage announcement.
Marker is facing charges of second-degree murder and is currently held in Suffolk County Jail.
She has a court appearance scheduled for March 2, following two prior court dates that were postponed for reasons that remain unclear.
