Mother from the Bay Area named as victim of Lake Tahoe avalanche

A mother from an affluent area near San Francisco has been identified as one of the eight victims of a devastating avalanche close to Lake Tahoe. The mayor of Mill Valley remarked that she was among a group of mothers from the city who went on this tragic ski trip.

However, no further details about the victims or their affiliations were shared.

“Our hearts in Mill Valley go out to the families affected,” Mayor Max Perry expressed. “This is an immense tragedy and a significant loss.”

It’s still uncertain if the mothers from Mill Valley had any connection to Sugar Bowl Academy, a private ski company nearby, although some of the victims were confirmed to be associated with it.

Neighbors described the deceased mother as someone who had, well, “the will to live.”

One neighbor, named Kim, said: “It’s shocking. It’s ski week. She has two adorable little kids, and all we’ve seen over the years is them walking to and from school. She had so much courage and zest for life—just a wonderful neighbor.” Kim also added, “It’s really scary. I never thought something like this would happen.”

That Tuesday, a group of 15 was caught in California’s deadliest avalanche in modern history. Six individuals were rescued, while the search continued for one person presumed dead.

The group was skiing in backcountry areas near Lake Tahoe under the guidance of Blackbird Mountain Guides when the avalanche struck.

Sugar Bowl Academy opted not to release any names out of respect for the grieving families. The private school and ski club is near Donner Summit.

“We are a very close-knit community, and this tragedy affects each and every one of us,” stated Stephen McMahon, Executive Director of Sugar Bowl Academy. “The best we can do is support the athletes and their families while giving them the space they need to grieve and heal.”
