A video that has gone viral features a mother at a San Francisco Giants game, multi-tasking as she juggles a baby and several food items, which has led to criticism directed at her partner for not assisting her.
The brief clip sparked considerable outrage online, prompting the mother, Erika, to share her side of the story in a Substack post. “At first, we thought the broadcast was amusing,” she noted, describing how she was returning from getting food while carrying their baby, while her husband sat back enjoying the game.
The footage from NBC Sports Bay Area showcased popular Giants announcers who playfully commented on the scene, calling Erika the “mom of the year.” “If there’s ever a true definition of a multitasking mother, that is the deal right there,” Krukow mentioned in the broadcast.
Erika said the video has since attracted a lot of attention, racking up more than 43.9 million views. “Friends and family reached out to us soon after seeing the clip. We couldn’t help but laugh at the commentary because, in reality, anyone who knows us would find it absurd to claim that Ramses doesn’t help with our kids,” she explained. Yet, as the clip gained traction, online commenters misconstrued the announcers’ playful narrative as proof of an unbalanced relationship.
Following the video’s rise in popularity, Erika received numerous irate messages aimed at Ramses, with some even suggesting she should leave him.
She elaborated that they were at the game to commemorate a friend of Ramses who had recently passed away. Erika had gone to the restroom and, when heading back, volunteered to grab food since she was passing a concession stand. While Ramses offered to take the baby, she wanted to keep her. He also suggested sharing a sandwich, but she told him to enjoy it alone.
“There was no debate over ketchup, and he didn’t complain about anything I forgot,” she clarified. Moreover, she expressed how important the game was to Ramses as a way to honor his late friend. “My husband would never admit it, but I know he’s been upset about losing him,” she remarked. “That night, I made a choice to support him. A video capturing me doing something for him doesn’t reflect all the times he’s supported me.”
Erika shared the negative side of going viral, especially concerning the impact of harsh remarks from strangers. “To those criticizing Ramses, please remember our kids might someday see your harsh words,” she implored. “I wouldn’t want them to stumble upon memories of people calling their dad a deadbeat.”
She also pointed out that some individuals had managed to uncover their personal information online, even sending threats. “Some of you have told my husband to take his own life,” she lamented. “To those who did that: shame on you. He’s a father, a son, loved by those who truly know him. Our children need him.”
Erika addressed the broadcasters directly as well. “I don’t believe there was any malintent. However, your jokes took a moment of love and turned it into something strangers used to mock my husband and critique our marriage,” she wrote. “What seemed like a lighthearted moment on your broadcast resulted in significant distress for our family. I wish you had understood the meaning of that night to him before making it a punchline.”
