Cincinnati Freshman Lineman Jeremiah Kelly Passes Away at 18
Jeremiah Kelly, a freshman offensive lineman for the Cincinnati football team, tragically passed away at just 18 years old this past April. His unexpected death shocked many, especially his mother, Chiniqua, who described him as the “healthiest child” and never indicated any health issues.
According to a coroner’s report, Kelly’s cause of death was linked to a condition known as “hypertensive heart,” where the heart muscles become thicker over time. It’s heartbreaking, really. Chiniqua mentioned that just the day before, he had been at home, wearing a heart monitor while engaging in physical activity.
Despite the findings from the coroner, Chiniqua expressed a desire for her two other sons to consult a sports cardiologist. It seems there’s this lingering feeling that perhaps there’s more one could do to safeguard their children, she told ESPN. “It makes you want to realize more, as if there’s something you can save your child,” she added.
Before his tragic passing, Kelly had successfully passed all necessary health checks to practice with the team, as mandated by the NCAA. He was registered early and took part in spring practices.
The Cincinnati football program issued a statement mourning Kelly’s loss, highlighting that he had been deeply cherished by everyone involved. Kelly not only excelled at Cincinnati but was also a key player for the Avon Eagles football team. In 2024, the Eagles went unbeaten at 16-0 under his leadership, and he earned honors such as SWC Lineman of the Year.
As a junior, he contributed to the team achieving a 14-1 record and had teammates, including Cincinnati’s current player Jacollion Cuffy. His contributions and spirit will be remembered dearly in the Cincinnati community.
This devastating news serves as a reminder of the potential hidden health issues even among seemingly healthy young athletes. It’s a sobering thought that resonates widely, perhaps making others reflect on their own health and the well-being of loved ones.
