Mother of Intern Killed in Drive-By Shooting Delivers Heartfelt Plea

The mother of a council intern who was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Washington, D.C., made an emotional appeal on Thursday, condemning the rise in crime and the ongoing suffering faced by families affected by such violence.

“Our lives are forever altered. My husband wishes it could have been him taking the bullet instead of our son. It’s just that severe,” she shared, illustrating the depth of their grief.

In a courageous interview, Tamara recounted the moment she received the devastating news that shattered their world.

Eric Tarpinian Yachim, the victim, was interning for Rep. Ron Estes at the time of his death. According to reports, the shooting was not intended to target Eric; it injured a 16-year-old male and an adult woman who were also present during the incident.

Tamara mentioned that, as far as she knew, the suspect had not yet been apprehended and that the 16-year-old might have been the intended target.

She urged local officials to stop being overly lenient, advocating for stricter crime policies that prioritize the safety of residents and visitors to Washington, D.C.

“We need an end to this,” she emphasized, underscoring the urgency of the situation. “The gangs must be dealt with; otherwise, more innocent people will continue to suffer.”

She expressed concern for other parents, warning that such tragedies could happen to anyone’s child.

President Donald Trump addressed the situation, suggesting that action needs to be taken regarding leadership in D.C., declaring that things can’t stay the same.

Tamara acknowledged the need for change, saying, “Lawmakers should make swift decisions rather than sit back and wait. Crime ought to be addressed decisively.”

“D.C. should be the safest place in the country,” she continued. “This kind of fear shouldn’t exist anywhere in America.”

Tamara expressed her gratitude for the support from Trump and the kindness shown by Rep. Estes’s office during such a difficult time. She described her son as an “old soul,” intelligent, humble, and deeply caring, particularly towards the elderly.

Overcome with emotion, she shared what Eric meant to her and her husband. “He had a special bond with his father; they were inseparable. He was my baby, a late gift in my life, and his siblings miss him dearly. He was a blessing.”
