Testimony Reveals Family’s Tragic Encounter at the Border
During a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, Marie Vega, a legal immigrant from Mexico, shared harrowing details about the day her son, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was shot by undocumented immigrants in South Texas. This event occurred in July 2014, during the Obama administration, while her family was enjoying a barbecue on their property in Laferia.
Vega described the incident as an ambush: “Our beautiful day turned into a nightmare when two criminally illegal aliens decided to attack us in an attempt to steal our trucks.” The assailants jumped out of a vehicle they had stolen.
Vega’s husband and son attempted to defend themselves, but the confrontation turned tragic. Her son, Javier “Harvey” Vega Jr., a former Marine and Border Patrol officer, was killed, and her husband sustained permanent injuries. The emotional toll weighed heavily on Marie; she recalled feeling helpless, especially as her young grandchild was nearby.
“Open borders have consequences,” she emphasized, stating that her experiences of loss and trauma would haunt her family forever. Vega expressed anguish as she watched her son being shot, recalling the fear and chaos that unfolded in those moments.
She questioned, “Do you know what it’s like to witness such violence? To hear the final words of your child?” Her description painted a vivid picture of the trauma, emphasizing that such events should never happen.
Vega highlighted that the two assailants had prior criminal histories, previously threatening neighbors and being deported before the attack. Living with what she termed “survivor’s guilt,” she reflected on how the aftermath of the shooting affected her mental health, making it hard to sleep and live without fear.
“For eleven years, I’ve faced the pain of celebrating life events without my son,” she disclosed, sharing how the impact of illegal immigration has adversely affected her family and, by extension, American society as a whole. Vega lamented that these criminals showed no regard for human life, recounting how they opened fire indiscriminately.
In her closing remarks, she urged lawmakers to recognize the gravity of their responsibilities. “If our immigration laws were enforced, my son would still be here,” she stated. Blaming former President Obama for the failure to protect her family and community, she called on the senators to fulfill their constitutional vows to safeguard American lives.
