Mother shares her thoughts on 'one poor choice' following the deadly accident involving Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder.

Katrina Hughes recently shared a deeply emotional update regarding her late son, Dominique Ponder, a former quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, who tragically lost his life in a car crash back in March.

“What truly matters to me is the kind of person Dominic was,” Hughes expressed in her statement.

“He was a dedicated student-athlete, a leader, and had a big heart that genuinely loved his family, teammates, and the sport of football.”

Hughes emphasized her hope that young people who fondly remember her son will make wiser choices, particularly after learning that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit at the time of the incident.

“If anything positive can arise from this tragedy, it’s that it sparks a discussion about responsible decision-making, supporting our youth, and making good choices in everyday situations,” she mentioned.

Ponder, who was only 23 at the time of his death, played at Bethune-Cookman University before transferring to Colorado in 2025, although he only attempted one pass during his time there.

His death was attributed to multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.

“One poor decision can change everything. It’s likely that 95% of people might have made similar choices and just got lucky, yet many wouldn’t acknowledge it,” Hughes added.

“A significant part of his legacy will be motivating young people to make responsible choices and, if necessary, to have the bravery to intervene if their friends aren’t thinking straight.”

“Kids should understand that it’s okay to step in, to do whatever it takes, because one small decision can save a life. Don’t hesitate, even if it feels uncomfortable. A tough conversation is far better than losing a lifetime.”

Ponder was a 6-foot-4 pro-style quarterback who had caught the interest of Miami as a three-star recruit in 2022.

“My hope is that he will be remembered not just for the worst day of our lives, but for his character, resilience, and his support for others,” Hughes stated.

In response to the loss of his backup quarterback, Colorado coach Deion Sanders shared his feelings.

“Dom was cherished, respected, and naturally led,” Mr. Sanders wrote. “Lord, you have received a good soul. Comfort us, Lord, comfort us. Let us pray for all who knew him.”
