Mother speaks out against Hollywood after teenager's death in suspected DUI crash involving an immigrant.

Weeks after the tragic deaths of her teenage daughter and her boyfriend in an accident involving a suspected drunk driver, a North Carolina mother is speaking out against the entertainment industry’s response to such tragedies. Shannon Swiderski Hamrick, whose daughter Skyler Provenza, 19, was killed, expressed her frustration during a recent statement.

Hamrick shared how she woke up, dealing with a wave of emotion just minutes before returning to work. “I woke up today and felt it. It’s Monday. I have to go back to work in six minutes,” she recounted. “I prayed, I cried, I got angry, I grieved. It’s not fair.” She emphasized that her daughter’s death was not a political matter but a consequence of reckless choices that were avoidable.

She mentioned trying to avoid the public debate surrounding her family’s situation, yet felt compelled to speak up after watching the Grammy Awards. Hamrick felt that celebrities used their platforms to advance political agendas, almost normalizing irresponsible behavior. “I watched the Grammys last night, and I shouldn’t have watched it,” she reflected, noting that many artists seemed detached from the real implications of such tragedies.

In her critique, Hamrick questioned whether those speaking out have personally faced the same loss. “It’s disgusting! Have any of the wealthy artists who speak out against ICE been personally affected in any way?” she asked. “Most wealthy people with a ‘voice’ probably had a driver everywhere they went.”

Skyler Provenza and 20-year-old Fletcher Harris, a talented soccer player, lost their lives in a head-on collision in January caused by Juan Alvarado Aguilar, 37, who had crossed the center line while reportedly intoxicated. Authorities indicated Aguilar was under the influence at the time and had a prior drunk driving charge, which was dismissed.

As family and friends mourned the loss, Republican lawmakers highlighted the need for accountability. Rep. Mark Harris noted the tragedy underscored a significant immigration enforcement failure. “Fletcher Harris and Skylar Provenza, two bright young lives with promise, were brutally snatched away,” he expressed, voicing the sentiment that many are feeling about the incident.

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall reflected on the necessity for better systems to handle undocumented immigrants engaging in serious crimes, stating it’s a policy failure. He reassured that actions are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

For Hamrick, however, the emphasis remains on the need for responsibility, faith, and respect for her daughter’s life. “I’m an American citizen living my life the right way,” she concluded. “My child was taken away from me, and we don’t even have support from those who could make a difference.”

“Be a decent human being,” she urged, “Make better choices.”
