Carjacking Incident in Lower Manhattan
A mother was the victim of a carjacking while picking up her daughter from a dance class in Lower Manhattan. This incident occurred just a short distance from the federal courthouse and City Hall, as reported by local law enforcement and the victim herself.
The 44-year-old woman, who chose to remain anonymous, was parked at the intersection of Broadway and Reed streets around 8 PM on Tuesday. She was waiting for her 11-year-old daughter to finish her lessons when a trio of carjackers targeted her Audi, which was left running.
“Out of nowhere, my door swung open…” she shared over the phone. “I initially thought it was my daughter coming back. But it seemed too fast; she shouldn’t be done yet.”
Looking up, she saw a masked individual who simply instructed her to get out of the car.
At that moment, the Brooklyn resident, who works in financial services nearby, realized she was in a precarious situation. “I thought, ‘Oh my God,’” she recounted. “I knew right away what was happening… I couldn’t see anyone else; it was just him. I thought, ‘Okay, this is serious.’”
Panicking, she grabbed her bag and keys, exited the car, and then started shouting for help from bystanders. “I thought I was being carjacked,” she recalled.
Two attentive passersby quickly came to her aid—one called 911 while she reached out to her husband. However, the thieves soon noticed she still held the car keys. They demanded she hand them over, which she did by tossing them onto the street.
“I wanted to throw the keys somewhere in the middle of Broadway—maybe a car would run over them,” she explained. “But they figured it out and just drove off.”
The NYPD’s First Precinct officers arrived within a minute. They placed her in a cruiser while searching for the suspects but couldn’t locate them. Later, they helped her return to pick up her daughter.
Police found the abandoned Audi a few miles away in Canarsie around 10:20 PM. However, the vehicle, which she had owned for only two weeks, was severely damaged. “It’s not drivable,” she stated. “When they retrieved it, it looked fine at first glance with just a dent, but the entire suspension was wrecked.”
Despite the incident, the shaken mother felt relieved that no one was hurt. “It’s upsetting that something like this can occur in such a crowded, supposedly safe area. It’s crazy how bold they were,” she noted, especially given the presence of officers nearby.
She expressed satisfaction with the police response, calling it “incredible.” Yet she wondered how the situation could have played out differently. “It seemed like they knew exactly what they were doing. Maybe they specifically targeted women who wouldn’t resist,” she mused.
As of Wednesday, police reported that no arrests had been made in connection with the case.
