A mother with a concealed concealed handgun license said she opened fire on a man who was trying to break into her daughter's bedroom window in Chicago over the weekend.
“The maternal instinct kicks in and as soon as something happens, it's like fight or flight,” said the mother, who asked not to be named. He told WLS-TV.
“Please don't try to commit a crime, especially try to break into someone's house, because you never know what's on the other side of the window.”
The mother told the station she had been a CCL holder for years and had never fired a gun until the incident Saturday night at a South Shore apartment.
According to WLS, the 18-year-old daughter had just returned to her bedroom after a bath just before 11 p.m.
“So I put a towel over myself and I ran out of the room and I ran over there and I was like, 'Hey, someone's trying to get in through the window,' so my mom sprang into action,” her daughter told the station.
His mother told WLS: “He was hanging out the window. I just said, 'I have a gun. I'm going to shoot you,' and he didn't stop. I fired a warning shot. I didn't even know he'd been shot.”
Police soon found the 36-year-old suspect, shot in the leg on East 69th Street in the Oglesby neighborhood, and he was taken to a hospital and cleared of suspicion, WLS reported Sunday night, adding that charges against the suspect were pending.
Both mother and daughter had advice for would-be intruders.
“The next time you think about climbing into someone's house through a window, remember what that bullet felt like,” his daughter told the station.
Her mother added to WLS: “Please don't try to commit any crimes, especially not try to break into someone's house. You never know what's on the other side of the window.”
She reported the incident to the police department, who confiscated the gun.
