A few years back, just before Christmas, Chris Wright was driving to church in Athens, Georgia, with his family when he spotted a woman alone on the roadside, carrying a gas can. It struck him as a troubling sight. After dropping off his wife and kids, he turned back to see if she needed assistance.
When he found her still on the trail, he pulled over and rolled down his window to ask if she was okay.
The worry on her face shifted to surprise and relief as she realized he was there to help.
During their drive to the gas station, the woman, Tunde Hector, expressed her gratitude. She mentioned having just $5 and was feeling anxious about providing Christmas presents for her children and keeping food on the table.
After filling her gas tank, Wright considered heading off but decided to give her the remaining $40 from his wallet, saying he felt compelled to help.

From the moment his mother met Hector, she was drawn to her warmth and compassionate care, providing comfort during a particularly hard time.
On a visit, Wright’s mother introduced him to Hector, who shared her dream of becoming a nurse after years of working as a nursing assistant.
Curious, Hector asked if Wright attended church. When he mentioned the name of his church, her face lit up.
“I met a young man from that church,” she said with excitement.
She recounted how a few weeks earlier, she had run out of gas while walking along the highway, and a man had stopped to help her. That man had been Wright.
Wright’s eyes widened in surprise as he confirmed, “That was me.”
As the realization struck, they embraced again.
A journey beyond expectations
In the following weeks, Hector became even more crucial to Wright’s mother’s care, forming a close bond with her.
When his mother passed, which coincidentally happened near Hector’s birthday, Wright and his family felt compelled to honor Hector’s dedication. They launched a GoFundMe campaign, initially aiming to raise $1,000 to support her nursing education. However, the response surpassed their wildest expectations.
When Wright handed Hector a check for $35,000, she was overwhelmed with emotion, clearly moved by such generosity.
Today, Hector has completed her nursing training and learned her employer would fully fund her tuition for further studies.
She intends to specialize in patient and home health advocacy.
