Mother and Boyfriend Charged in Death of Child
In Texas, a mother is accused of ignoring the abuse her boyfriend allegedly inflicted on her 3-year-old son, leading to tragic consequences. Both she and her boyfriend now face charges of capital murder following the child’s death.
Reports indicate that Chelsea Berg’s boyfriend, Christopher Alexander, took 3-year-old Dawson Zamora to Medical City McKinney on October 14. At the hospital, the medical staff noticed serious physical injuries on the child, raising concerns about potential abuse.
According to statements, witnesses observed Alexander on the phone with Berg, seemingly agitated. Some witnesses even heard Berg making comments about how rough Alexander was with the child, implying he had hit him to wake him up.
Investigators later learned from Berg that Dawson had been hospitalized before for minor illnesses but she had also recently noticed bruises on his body and attributed them to incidents at his daycare. She expressed trust in Alexander, noting that she had never seen anything alarming regarding his behavior with her children.
During questioning, detectives showed Berg images of Dawson’s injuries, which were described as severe and included damage to various parts of his body. Yet, she claimed not to have seen most of these injuries and expressed disbelief at their severity.
KFDA reports that Berg did not indicate Alexander was to blame for the abuse. Despite the severity of her son’s condition, which doctors noted could lead to death or permanent disability, Dawson was taken to Children’s Medical Center Dallas for further treatment.
As part of the investigation, police secured search warrants for the apartments of Berg, Alexander, and Dawson. Evidence collected suggested that there had been attempts to cover up injuries and potentially clean up blood from previous incidents. Additionally, digital data from several devices hinted that Dawson had sustained multiple injuries while alone with Alexander over the past few months.
The police concluded that Berg was aware of her child’s widespread injuries and the danger posed by her boyfriend. Tragically, Dawson succumbed to his injuries the following Sunday.
Documents also revealed that evidence of ongoing abuse was apparent, and Berg and Alexander worried that seeking medical help might lead to involvement from Child Protective Services. The couple allegedly downplayed the severity of the situation when questioned.
Berg was arrested the day after Dawson’s death, with her charges updated to capital murder, while Alexander’s charges also reflected this serious escalation. A conviction could lead to the death penalty or life imprisonment in Texas.
Initially, both were arrested in October and faced charges related to child injury, with Alexander additionally charged with tampering with evidence. While Berg was briefly released on bail, she was arrested again on Monday.
Dawson’s father, Darian Zamora, shared the devastating news of his son’s passing on social media, reflecting on the bittersweet timing of the tragedy coinciding with his own birthday.
