Republican Sen. John Thune won the race for Republican Senate leader.
He defeated John Cornyn and Rick Scott.
On November 13, the Senate Republicans announced that Sen. John Thune (R.S.D.) will be the new leader of the 119th Congress, replacing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has held the position for nearly 20 years. was selected.
Thune won by a 29-24 vote over Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) after two rounds of secret ballots, according to a person familiar with the final vote count.
A third candidate, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida), was defeated after the first vote.
“I am deeply honored to have the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress,” Thune told reporters after the vote. I couldn't be more proud.'' “This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s policies, and our work begins today.”
President Trump congratulated Thune on his victory, saying, “He will move quickly and do a great job. I look forward to working with him.”
