A 12-Year-Old’s Dream Comes True with a Bionic Arm

A young boy, just 12 years old, was truly astounded to receive his first bionic arm, a special creation by the popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast.

Kai Polnitz was born without a right hand and recently got a custom-made prosthetic limb at the Open Bionics Clinic located in Austin, Texas.

MrBeast took the time to personally visit Kai at the clinic, where he presented him with the advanced Hero PRO arm developed by Open Bionics.

“I was speechless at first,” Kai shared.

This moment was particularly significant for him, as he had dreamed for years of having a bionic arm to assist with daily tasks and boost his confidence at school.

Kai hopes that his journey can inspire others, showing that with determination and adaptability, one can overcome obstacles.

Living near Austin, Kai encountered teasing and bullying when he entered middle school, which further fueled his desire for a bionic arm—something many of his peers could do without thinking, like tying his karate belt, cutting his meals, riding a bike, and simply feeling more at ease during everyday activities.

While searching for prosthetic options, his family found Open Bionics, a Colorado-based company recognized for its innovative multi-grip bionic arms.

This impressive arm comes with customizable covers, made in partnership with brands like Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Call of Duty.

Regrettably, Kai’s insurance does not cover the expenses associated with the myoelectric prosthesis.

“We tried everything we could as a family, including crowdfunding,” said his adoptive mother, Charlotte Polnitz.

“Making a video to ask for help was humbling, but we just wanted to give Kai a fair chance at life. Every donation felt like hope.”

Despite the slow progress in fundraising, Charlotte brought Kai to Open Bionics for an assessment.

“From the start, Open Bionics made us feel valued, even before we could afford the arm,” she recalled.

“Whenever we had questions, someone was there with thoughtful advice. We knew we were in good hands.”

During the appointment, Kai got to try on the bionic arm for the first time.

“We both ended up crying,” Charlotte explained. “He couldn’t use his hands before, and now he could.”

“It was incredible to watch him pick up something with his right hand and drink from a cup,” she added.

Kai described the experience as “amazing,” but he remained grounded about his family’s situation.

“It would be awesome to have my right hand, but I’m okay with waiting,” he reassured his mother.

Unbeknownst to Kai, his story had already caught the attention of MrBeast, who decided to step in.

When Kai returned to the clinic, he thought he was attending a routine follow-up, but MrBeast surprised him with a specially designed Hero PRO bionic arm with a personal touch—a cover that featured the creator’s iconic blue and pink panther along with Kai’s name.

“He was just in utter disbelief,” Charlotte remarked. “He kept whispering, ‘Mom, is this real? Is that really Mr. Beast?’”

Kai expressed his disbelief, saying, “At first, I couldn’t even talk. I never imagined I would meet him.”

Tilly Lockey, an ambassador for Open Bionics and a bilateral bionic arm user, was also present for the special moment.

“Being involved in this project with MrBeast feels like a full-circle moment for me,” Tilly noted. “I used to be the kid awed by a bionic arm, and now I’m here supporting Kai.”

“I recognize how transformative that experience can be.”

The Hero PRO is among the most advanced multi-grip bionic arms currently available, created based on feedback from over 1,000 users during four years of development.

Totally wireless and water-resistant, the device can lift up to 55 pounds and features a touchscreen along with fully articulated wrists and quick-release options for different activities.

With his new arm, Kai is undertaking tasks with both hands for the first time, from playing basketball to helping out in the kitchen.

“We never expected something like this to happen for him,” Charlotte reflected. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event—not just because he met his hero, but because he received a bionic arm that truly changes life for him.”

Samantha Payne, co-founder and CEO of Open Bionics, shared that witnessing Kai receive the Hero PRO was meaningful for everyone involved.

When asked what he wanted others to take away from his experience, Kai offered some straightforward wisdom.

“Don’t let anyone bring you down,” he said. “There’s nothing stopping you. Just find alternative ways to adapt.”
