MSNBC and CNNLOL Experience a 40% Drop in Viewers from Last Year

MSNBC and CNN Losing Viewers

It seems like MSNBC and CNN are facing significant drops in viewership. For instance, MSNBC has seen a 40% decline in primetime viewers compared to the same week last year, while CNN isn’t far behind with a 44% drop. Interesting, right?

On the other hand, Fox News appears to be holding up better, with only a 16% loss in primetime viewership.

This situation might indicate a shift in public interests. The appeal of “Resistance TV” seems to have waned since its peak in 2017, at least according to some observers who point to popular figures like Stephen Colbert and Howard Stern.

Now, that 16% figure from Fox News is noteworthy. After all, last year was quite the eventful one with all things related to the presidential elections and, well, the “Super Bowl” of cable news. Unless there’s a major conflict, it’s unlikely cable news will draw the same audience this year. Still, the contrast is striking: while Fox News has a more manageable decrease, MSNBC and CNN are floundering.

Here are the details from the week of July 21st:

  • Fox: 241 million viewers (-16%) / 232,000 in the demo (-41%)
  • MSNBC: 906,000 viewers (-40%) / 78,000 in the demo (-58%)
  • CNN: 480,000 viewers (-44%) / 89,000 in the demo (-54%)

When looking at all average days in May, the losses are similarly notable:

  • Fox: 1.484 million viewers (-14%) / 157,000 in the demo (-34%)
  • MSNBC: 562,000 viewers (-40%) / 50,000 in the demo (-55%)
  • CNN: 359,000 viewers (-37%) / 60,000 in the demo (-51%)

The demo numbers are crucial since they impact advertising rates. It seems like not many from that demographic are tuning into CNN or MSNBC.

To reiterate, without favorable cable-telephone rates, CNN may struggle to stay afloat, while MSNBC is already making cuts to staffing and budgets to survive.

This is simply the reality of the situation.

If you’re still paying for cable TV, you’re supporting these channels, whether you watch them or not. MSNBC, CNN, and similar networks benefit regardless of your viewing habits; they still get a chunk of your monthly payment. It might be worth reconsidering your cable or satellite subscriptions.

And let’s not forget about those overwhelmingly annoying drug advertisements that seem to saturate these channels. Some voices suggest they should be banned entirely.

The bottom line? It may be time to cut the cord and stop supporting networks that you don’t align with. Ultimately, things could improve if enough people decide to take that step.
