MSNBC graph shows border-crossing surge after Trump left office: ‘Not Biden’s finest moment’

during Thursday's episode MSNBC “Morning Joe” Former Obama administration official admitted Border crossings have reportedly increased rapidly since President-elect Donald Trump left office.

Stephen Ratner, who served as an adviser to the Treasury secretary under former President Barack Obama, led a news segment that featured a graph of monthly encounters at the southern border under the Trump and Biden administrations.

“Part of that was what Mr. Biden said.”

The chart further breaks down encounters by nationality and shows statistics for foreigners from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and all other countries.

“Frankly, the border wasn't Biden's finest moment. You see what happened here,” Ratner said, pointing to the line on the graph that separates the Trump and Biden administrations. He said this shows a serious increase.

“Mr. Trump is right when he says border crossings had very low traffic. When he left office, there were about 74,000 border crossings a month,” he continued. “And they did, in fact, riot, and part of that was because of Biden's statements and the moratorium on deportations, for example.”

He noted that under the Biden administration, encounters peaked at 300,000 per month.

“But what people probably don't fully know is that border crossings are back to about the same level as they were during the Trump administration,” Ratner argued. “Right now we're running about $100,000. So we went up hill and down hill. But unfortunately, it cost us a lot.”

Ratner's analysis, which says the number of monthly contacts has decreased under the Biden administration, overlooks the various so-called “legal channels” the administration has implemented. One of the additional routes is CHNV The program has allowed hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to enter the country, avoiding an increase in the number of people encountered at the border.

Additionally, the CBP One app now allows foreign nationals to schedule an appointment to apply for asylum. Similarly, these individuals are not included in border encounter statistics.

Biden administration also extended Temporary protection status Foreigners from Venezuela, El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and several other countries are eligible.

Additionally, contact at the U.S.-Canada border has increased significantly under the current administration.

Encounter statistics do not include known or unknown escapes.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection dataSouthern border crossings fell to a four-year low in November.

Troy A. Miller, Acting Director of U.S. CBP, said: said“Intensified enforcement efforts in recent months, combined with executive actions and coordination with Mexico and Central American countries, are having a lasting and meaningful impact.”
