MSNBC Star Says She’s Abandoning Democrats After Shutdown Debacle

Symone Sanders Townsend, a former Democratic operative at MSNBC, said it would register as an independent Saturday in response to Senate Democrats who help pass the funding bill.

New York Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer fired fire from left-wing media figures and Democrats in Congress about his decision to break the candles on a GOP-backed spending bill. Former Biden administration official Sanders Townsend said Schumer's decision was a deal-smasher for her. “I'm mad,” Sanders Townsend said at the opening of Saturday's “Weekend” episode. “The truth is that the 10 Democrats who voted for Republicans can't really say that Senate minority leaders can appease someone like me. We're changing the registration to independent.”

Thundertownsend praised Democrats Hicombe Jeffries of New York as he continues to unite House Democrats against the law that won 217-213 votes on March 11.

“Members in the country's toughest districts have to come out there now, with very difficult votes without the support of Senate leaders,” Edwards said. “I think that's a very unfortunate.”

“This is a real black mark and a stain on Chuck Schumer's leadership,” Edwards added.

“The Weekend” co-hosts Alicia Menendez, daughter of former New Jersey Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez, and New York Democrat, said that Schumer could challenge the primary.

“That's why members of the Democratic Caucus are personally encouraging Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as their primary Schumer,” Menendez said.

“Anyone can prime him,” replied Sanders Townsend.

Schumer initially declared his opposition to the Republican spending bill, calling for a 30-day ongoing resolution before agreeing to pass the Republican bill. Jeffries later refused to respond to reporters when asked if Schumer should continue leading the Senate Democrats.

Opinion survey from NBC and CNN Less than a third of respondents have a positive view of Democrats, while the minority has disapproved the Democrats.
