MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki reacted to President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race on her show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” on Sunday.
“While there have been reports that Democrats are calling on him to do so, there has been little indication from those close to him or many in his campaign that this is exactly what was going to happen,” she said after reading the letter the president sent to X.
The president announced Sunday that he would “step aside” from the 2024 presidential race, following urging from numerous leading Democrats.
“I don’t think either of us had any indication,” Psaki told guest Tim Miller of The Bulwark. “I always believe we should share publicly what we know and what we don’t know. I knew there were a lot of calls, but there was no official indication even 10 minutes ago that a decision had been made. I spoke with Keisha Lance Bottoms just before this hour and asked her if there had been any indication, and she’s a senior adviser, but she didn’t know anything.”

Polls show a majority of Democrats think Kamala Harris would be a good president
“I’m here digesting this for myself, because I worked for him for a year and a half. He’s a great person, a great president. He’s run a great presidency, he overcame challenges and exceeded people’s expectations. People didn’t expect him to pass an infrastructure bill, they didn’t expect him to lead through COVID-19, they didn’t expect him to bring the country together,” Psaki added.
She too seemed unable to hold back her tears.
“He’s done all of that and he’ll continue to do that and he’s also a very good person, and I know that myself, and I just want to share that,” Psaki said.

“Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life,” Biden said in the open letter. “While I intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country to step aside from office for the remainder of my term and focus on fulfilling the duties of my presidency.”
