Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) filed a motion Friday that could force a vote to strip House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) of the gavel.
The motion is not privileged, meaning the House will not vote on it immediately. This procedural motion is the same one used by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to end Kevin McCarthy’s speaking career in October 2023 after just nine months.
Greene introduced the motion just before the House was to vote on the $1.2 trillion minibus spending bill. The more than 1,000-page bill was announced at 2 a.m. ET on Thursday, but Johnson decided to hold a vote on Friday morning to pass rules designed to give lawmakers enough time to consider the bill. Violated.

Significantly, Mr. Johnson violated the Hastert Rule in passing the spending bill. The rule states that the Republican speaker cannot pass legislation without the support of a majority of the House Republican conference. However, only 101 Republicans voted for the bill, and 112 voted against it.
Greene could turn her resolution into a privileged resolution, which would force action in the House. However, the passage of the spending bill sent the House into a two-week Easter recess. When the House of Commons reconvenes, questions about Mr Johnson’s future will be louder than ever.
