MTV closing music channels in Europe – will the US follow?

MTV Shuts Down Music Channels in the UK, Future in the US Uncertain

MTV has decided to close its music channels in the UK, leaving fans speculating about whether the US might be next.

As reported by the BBC, the network will discontinue five of its channels in the UK, including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. These channels are set to cease operations after December 31, 2025.

While the flagship channel, MTV HD, will still be accessible, it seems to have shifted its focus mainly to reality shows like Teen Mom and Geordie Shore, rather than music videos.

MTV started in the United States in 1981 as the first 24-hour music television network. It quickly made a name for itself, producing memorable moments such as the premiere of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video in 1983 and the extensive coverage of the Live Aid concert in 1985.

The inaugural MTV Video Music Awards took place in 1984, featuring performances from icons like Madonna and Tina Turner.

Following the launch of its European channel in 1987 and a UK version in 1997, MTV’s viewership has notably waned over the years, as audiences have shifted to platforms like YouTube for music.

In 2011, MTV HD eliminated music videos from its programming and began distributing music content to sister channels in an attempt to regain viewers.

MTV Entertainment Group, which is part of Paramount Skydance, also produces popular shows like “Beavis and Butthead” and “Catfish.”

Recently, Paramount Global and Skydance Media completed an $8.4 billion merger and are now pursuing cost-cutting measures across their operations, reportedly seeking to save up to $500 million.

In August, they closed Paramount Television Studios, responsible for productions like the action series “Jack Ryan,” which featured John Krasinski.

Reports indicate that MTV music channels in Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil are also expected to shut down, mirroring the UK’s situation.

Paramount has not responded to requests for comments regarding potential future closures.

Simone Angel, a former employee of MTV Europe and MTV UK from the 1990s, expressed her sadness about the situation, stating, “I’m really sad and in a bit of disbelief, but I know it’s going to take a long time.”

Reflecting on the past, Angel recalled MTV Europe as a groundbreaking platform. “At the time, we were the most popular TV channel in the world, with 100 million to 150 million viewers,” she shared.

She also mentioned the cultural impact of MTV, citing a moment when former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev acknowledged how the channel informed young people in communist countries about Western life during the 1980s.

“You have to move with the times,” Angel continued. “To this day, it’s one of the most famous brands in the world. Why on earth would you throw it away?”
