Subpoena Hearing for Robert Mueller Canceled Due to Health Issues

Last month, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee began a high-profile subpoena hearing with former Attorney General Bill Barr, who had looked into Jeffrey Epstein’s controversial death. However, things took an unexpected turn on Tuesday during the scheduled hearing for former FBI director Robert Mueller, leading to its cancellation.

Mueller, who took over as FBI director just before the September 11 attacks and resigned in 2013, was reportedly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years ago.

“Mr. Mueller has learned he has health issues that prevent him from testifying,” stated an aide from the committee.

In light of his health conditions, the committee decided to withdraw the subpoena. CBS News noted earlier this week, “The committee has withdrawn the subpoena,” citing concerns for Mueller’s wellbeing.

According to a statement from his family, “Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the summer of 2021.” They indicated that he stepped back from law practice at the end of that year. He had taught at his alma mater during the uncertainties of 2021 and 2022 before fully retiring at the end of 2022. His family has requested privacy as they navigate these difficult times.

Concerns regarding Mueller’s health have been discussed since at least 2019. During a critical hearing on the Russian investigation, observers noted his hands and voice were shaking, raising alarms about his condition.

In a cover letter dated August 5, Chairman James Comer (R-KY) outlined why the subpoena was issued on July 23, 2025, requesting information that Mueller might have related to the Epstein investigation. The committee believed he held key knowledge due to his previous position and the investigations surrounding Epstein.

The hearing was initially slated for September 2, 2025.
