DHS Secretary Criticizes Protests on Memorial Day

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed strong disapproval of anti-ICE protests that occurred at a detention facility in Newark on Memorial Day. He accused Democrats of using a day meant to honor fallen soldiers as a platform for political protest.

During an appearance on “Hannity,” Mullin stated, “This shows where their priorities are, choosing Memorial Day of all days to protest our efforts to remove criminals from the streets.” He added, “It seems their focus is more on protecting the worst offenders rather than honoring the sacrifices of the men and women who fought for the freedoms that allow for such protests.”

Mullin further questioned the motives of the protesters for making Memorial Day the night they decided to demonstrate.

In an interview, he mentioned having a conversation with New Jersey Senator Andy Kim, who had claimed that detainees in the facility had initiated a hunger strike. Mullin dismissed that assertion as untrue.

He noted that while DHS allowed Kim access to the facility, they imposed certain restrictions on his visit. “We ended up granting him access,” Mullin remarked.

Mullin indicated that Democratic officials, including New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, heightened the tension outside the facility and turned the situation into a political event. “It seems like it was all for show,” he remarked.

He also stated that, despite claims of trying to ease the situation, one could see an Antifa flag being displayed during the protest. Mullin criticized local police for not adequately addressing the protesters who obstructed roadways and attempted to breach security barriers around the facility.
