Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith held a press conference at 1:13 p.m. local time and confirmed that the shooting at Apalachee High School had left “multiple injured” and that one suspect was in custody.
The same day, Breitbart News reported that a shooting had been reported and a suspect had been arrested.
Initial reports indicated police were called to a shooter at about 10:30 a.m., but Sheriff Smith said Police received a report of an “active shooter” around 9:30 a.m.
“Clearly, what we see behind us today is evil,” Smith said, standing in front of the school.
“We are not releasing information about casualties, but there are multiple injuries,” he added.
Sheriff Smith emphasized that a suspect is in custody and called on the media to give law enforcement time to investigate, get the facts and “report it right.”
When asked by reporters about the deaths, Smith clarified that at this stage they were only aware of “multiple injuries.”
