Mulvaney to Trump: Don’t ‘out-Democrat the Democrats’

Former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney sent a message to former President Trump on Thursday: “Don't try to 'outdo' the Democrats.”

Mulvaney, a contributor to NewsNation's “The Hill,” told the camera: “Mr. President, please stop talking to the people and taking advice from the people who are telling you to out-maneuver the Democrats.”

“Republicans lose every time they do that. It's a really terrible policy,” he continued.

Mulvaney was referring to President Trump's shifting stance on the controversial SALT deduction cap and other economic policy proposals, such as not taxing tips.

President Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday that he was working with “Democratic Governors and Mayors” to “turn this around” and “bring back SALT.”

The SALT (state and local tax) was introduced in the $10,000 tax cut package under President Trump's 2017 tax cuts, and was highly unpopular in Democratic-leaning states because many high-income households used it as a tax cut.

Democrats were quick to point this out, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) accusing Trump of “selective amnesia” in now defending the SALT deduction.

The former president's comments came just days after he proposed eliminating taxes on overtime pay, an idea that Harris' campaign dismissed as a “desperate” vote-gathering ploy, noting that under Trump, he chose not to defend Obama-era labor rules on overtime pay.

Earlier this year, Harris also said she would eliminate tip taxes as an appeal to hospitality workers, an idea she has said she supports. Some have questioned how the proposal would work and noted it could be costly.
