A teenage gunman wanted for killing one woman and wounding another was cornered by police in a New Jersey backyard after a five-hour pursuit, dramatic video showed.
Surveillance footage from a Carteret home captured the moment officers surrounded Guarav Gill, 19, of Washington state, who was wanted for shooting and killing Jasbir Kaur, 29, and seriously wounding a 20-year-old woman on Wednesday morning. CBS News reported.
Gill, who had been hiding in a neighborhood, was seen with his hands up close to a backyard fence when officers swooped in and pointed their weapons at him through the fence and shrubbery.
Mr Gill is then seen falling to the ground as two officers approach him from behind, before a third officer kicks the fence open and goes through.
Officers established a containment area in Carteret and were tipped off to Gill’s location after neighbors spotted him wandering around a number of dead-end blocks in the neighborhood.
The caller, Lara Lawton, said she had been on edge all day after reports of a shooting in her area and was shocked to see the suspect walking down her street.
“I had to take a second look to make sure it was really him. I looked at the photo and it matched so I called the police and was screaming in my front yard directing the officers where to go on the side of the road.” she told News 12. “They were passing by down the street and he was on our side street.”
At one point, Gill was seen running through the woods near Medwick Park where he was confronted by local resident Elias Suarez, who mistook Gill for a sweaty jogger.
Suarez told CBS that he gave Gil some water but eventually told him to leave the house after he asked to borrow his phone.
Gil was eventually caught behind the home of Suarez’s son, Orlando.
Gill was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center prior to his initial court appearance.
He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of fourth-degree possession of a large capacity magazine and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
