A transgender man has informed authorities that he felt envious of the woman he stalked and ultimately killed on a hiking trail in Phoenix, Arizona.
Zion Teasley, 25, entered a guilty plea for first-degree murder in connection with the 2023 death of 29-year-old beauty technician Lauren Heike. In exchange for his plea, he received a life sentence instead of facing the death penalty.
According to investigators, Teasley pursued Heike as she hiked in a desert region close to her residence. Surveillance footage captured a man walking behind her, and he was later seen fleeing the area after she vanished.
The following day, Heike’s body was discovered, showing early signs of decomposition. She was quickly identified once she failed to show up for work, leading to her being reported missing.
An autopsy indicated that Heike had been stabbed 15 times, with the deepest cut measuring three inches. Police determined that the nature of her wounds was consistent with a pocket knife that Teasley frequently carried.
Authorities noted that Heike had defensive wounds on her hands and arms and that the attack occurred from behind.
Teasley’s DNA was found on Heike’s shoe, and he had previously spent time in jail.
In a diary obtained by investigators, Teasley expressed feelings of jealousy toward women and reflected on his struggles with faith. His writings reveal an inner conflict regarding his gender identity and sexuality, as he identified himself as a Christian.
“I have been battling with my gender identity and sexuality. I am Christian, so this isn’t allowed. I want to live a life of serving God, but how can I with these and other sins in the way?” he wrote.
One particular entry highlighted his sense of despair, saying he felt downcast when seeing beautiful women.
During an interview after his arrest, police showed Teasley a photo of Heike, to which he remarked, “That’s what I would want to look like.”
At the time of the murder, Teasley was on probation following a prison sentence for over a year. His criminal history includes convictions for armed robbery and other offenses.
His former employer informed investigators that Teasley had been fired for exhibiting aggressive behavior towards female coworkers and suspicions of stealing merchandise. Surveillance footage from the store confirmed that the clothes he wore during the attack matched those from previous thefts.
Teasley was also indicated as a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, although the Marines clarified he did not complete his training.
“Our records indicate that Zion W. Teasley entered recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot on March 25, 2019. He was separated on June 17, 2019, prior to completing boot camp,” the Marine Corps stated.
Heike’s family issued a statement expressing their support for the state’s initial push for a death penalty but acknowledged relief in accepting Teasley’s plea deal. They stated, “While no sentence will ever bring Lauren back, we are relieved knowing that he will never be released….”
Furthermore, investigators noted that Teasley expressed concerns about his soul’s salvation during questioning, denying any premeditated intention to kill Heike.
