Ex-Convict Found Guilty of Murder in California

A former convict in California has been convicted of murder after fatally shooting an innocent woman while on a stolen motorcycle in Kern County.

Louis Villachana, 51, from Kern County, is looking at a potential life sentence for the 2024 shooting of Ruth Ann Cummings, 44. This incident occurred when she arrived at the Oildale home where Villachana had been threatening her husband and daughter.

Reportedly, just before he pulled the trigger, Villachana stated, “I’m going to smoke you all out,” according to court documents.

The trouble began on August 29, 2024, when Villachana’s motorcycle was stolen from his residence. Instead of reporting it to the authorities, he took matters into his own hands, attempting to recover the bike himself.

His search led him and two associates to a home in Oildale, where they discovered the motorcycle in the garage.

Upon entering the house, Villachana questioned the roommate about the bike’s theft. After receiving no response, prosecutors state that he assaulted the man.

Another roommate later contacted her parents for assistance.

According to prosecutors, the father of the second roommate arrived to calm things down but ended up getting into a physical altercation with Villachana after the latter shot him in the foot.

As the man fled, Villachana fired again, wounding him and then targeting an SUV driven by Cummings, who had come to assist her husband.

Tragically, Cummings sustained injuries from the gunfire and later died.

Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer remarked, “Mr. Villachana’s actions were avoidable and completely unjustified.”

Villachana was apprehended in Shafter more than a week after the shooting.

He was convicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, robbery, and attempted murder. At the upcoming sentencing on August 14, he faces a maximum of 50 years to life in prison, along with an additional 24 years and four months.
