Musk threatens to ban Apple at his firms over OpenAI integration

Tech CEO Elon Musk I said it was forbidden Apple will ban its own employees from using its products if it goes ahead with plans to roll out artificial intelligence (AI) features it announced on Monday.

Apple said the “intelligence” feature that integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT will allow it to customize the phone to suit users’ needs and add functionality.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, Apple devices would be banned at my company. It would be an unacceptable security breach,” Musk wrote on his social media platform, X.

Musk, who heads X, car maker Tesla and space company SpaceX, launched his own artificial intelligence venture xAI last year, an OpenAI competitor that claimed to have raised $6 billion last month at a valuation of $18 billion.

The threat is a growing feud between Musk and OpenAI, which he co-founded but has since parted ways with. Musk’s rivalry escalated into a legal battle in March, when he sued the company and its president, Sam Altman, claiming that Altman had promised to develop AI for the benefit of humanity and that the companies had reneged on their agreement. Musk later said that the legal battle was what prompted him to found xAI.

The company announced on Monday that through Apple Intelligence, users will be able to prioritize notifications and get help switching languages across apps, including Email, Notes, and Messages.

The feature will be included as part of the new iOS 18 release, as well as in Mac and iPad operating system updates coming this fall.

Apple said access to ChatGPT will be built into its Siri voice assistant and available on its other devices.

Earlier this year, xAI released its own text generation AI model called Grok as a rival to ChatGPT.
