WNBA star Brittney Griner, who has spent years protesting the country during the anthem, is trying to explain why she cried during it. Stars and Stripes At the Olympics.
Griner became visibly emotional during the national anthem after the U.S. women’s basketball team won the gold medal at the Paris Games. As she stood with her medal around her neck during the anthem after beating France by one point, 67-66, Griner became so emotional at one point that tears streamed down her cheeks.

But now, Griner explain Fox News reported why she was so emotional in Paris.
“My country fought for me to return” – Griner said“I won,” he said, according to Yahoo Sports. “And I got to bring a gold medal home to my country. I couldn’t be happier.”
The Phoenix Mercury Center was referring to a deal President Joe Biden made with Russia to free Griner from prison where he was sent after being arrested at a Moscow airport and convicted of drug offences.
Griner added that while he was in a Russian prison he never thought he’d ever return to his home country or play for it in the Olympics.
“And just to be standing here, winning a gold medal for my country, representing my country and knowing that my country fought so hard for me, I’m just happy,” she said.
USA head coach Cherry Reeve added that she was “grateful” for Griner to have the opportunity to play for the U.S. national team.
“She was so grateful to be here… I think we should all be keeping an eye on her because what she’s been through is enormous,” Reeve argued.
