Predictions from Former Michigan GOP Candidate
Mike Rogers, a former Republican candidate from Michigan recruited by Trump, shared his thoughts with Breitbart News on Saturday. He believes that candidates in the Democratic primary will increasingly move to the left, potentially alienating working-class Democrats.
Rogers came close to winning the Senate race in Michigan. In November 2024, Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is set to be the Republican contender since the Michigan GOP is not hosting a primary this cycle. Meanwhile, the Democratic candidates in Michigan are currently in a highly competitive environment, pushing each other toward more extreme positions.
“They’re still trying to figure out who can allow biological men in girls’ sports and locker rooms,” he remarked. “They seem to support the Mamdani grocery store acquisition. I mean, it’s like they keep drifting further left. This is significant for the seat because the Democrats in Michigan aren’t really that liberal. As these candidates veer left, a number of Democrats could feel disenfranchised.”
Rogers noted that this trend is encouraging for Republicans, pointing out that without a primary, the party stands united behind him. He expressed confidence, saying, “We have a fantastic opportunity.”
He added, “And they’re leaning left rapidly. They’re attacking issues that I care about. We’re actually doing the groundwork across the state; we have co-chairs in all 83 counties.”
Rogers, who previously chaired the Select Committee on Intelligence, cautioned against underestimating the dynamics of midterm elections. Incumbent parties often face challenges, especially with the possibility of an open seat following Gretchen Whitmer’s (D-MI) term expiring in 2027.
“So don’t fall for this narrative of ‘Oh, it’s mid-term,'” he cautioned. “We’ve got two factors here: an open seat that sparks more interest than usual, and a gubernatorial race with a Democratic governor who has served for eight years.”
“People are ready for change. Republicans could come in, and with a Republican governor working alongside Republican U.S. Senators, there’s a chance to say, ‘This is what Michigan needs, Mr. President.’ We’re moving past that,” he articulated.
Rogers nearly edged out Slotkin in their previous race, garnering 48.30% of the vote compared to her 48.64%. Michigan is viewed as a prime target for Republicans, currently represented by Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), who is expected to retire at the end of his term.
